Youngsters have been told they shall go to the ball by a charity that gives away prom dresses and suits for free.

The North Essex Support Team (NEST) offered its services so families who could not afford the clothing would not see their children miss out.

NEST chairman Les Nicoll said several giveaway events would take place across Essex in April and May.

"You see all the young people looking absolutely amazing and it's nice to do," said Mr Nicoll.

The 72-year-old said last year the charity handed out more than 500 prom dresses and suits, as well as shoes, handbags and jewellery.

He revealed donations had continued to pour in since he founded the charity four years ago, with items sent from across Essex and elsewhere in England.

"We were hearing people talking about how they couldn't afford to pay for prom dresses and it just seemed there was room to help people," Mr Nicoll said.

"I never have a shortage of volunteers, ever. It is very very emotional - I have seen more dads crying than anyone else."

Mr Nicoll, who served as a firefighter for 54 years, said the golden rule of the giveaways was that there was no judgement.

They would start on Saturday in Harwich and run until 19 May, also visiting Colchester, Harlow, Maldon and Clacton-on-Sea.

He added: "It is meaningful and fulfils me as a grandfather."
